In this live session, we work with small figures – action figures, miniatures, or similar models – to explore transitional moments.
Many figures are designed for action scenes and dramatic battles. Here we take a different approach.
Instead of capturing action, we focus on the quieter moments surrounding it:
anticipation
encounter
hesitation
aftermath
contemplation
A figure standing still can suggest a surprising amount. A slight turn of the head, a shift in posture, or a change in light can transform the moment entirely.
Photography becomes a way to hold these subtle situations and examine how small visual changes shape perception.
This is not a photography class.
It is not role-play.
It is a guided perceptual inquiry.
Transitional Moments
The scenes we explore often exist in the space between events.
Something may be about to happen.
Something may have just happened.
A figure pauses before entering a space.
Two characters face each other before a decision is made.
A lone figure observes something beyond the frame.
By adjusting posture, distance, framing, and light, we explore how subtle changes shift the perceived moment.
We are not constructing elaborate scenes or telling full stories.
We are observing how small visual changes alter how a moment is perceived.
What We Explore
Across 120 minutes, we move through a structured sequence of small explorations:
selecting figures and observing their posture and presence
placing a single figure within a simple frame
introducing a second figure to create tension or attention
adjusting distance, orientation, and gaze
exploring how light and vantage point influence the perceived moment
articulating how different arrangements shift interpretation
There is no correct reading.
The aim is not to produce polished photographs but to notice how subtle visual cues suggest different situations.
By the end of the session, participants will have explored several figure configurations and observed how small spatial changes alter the perceived moment.
What to Bring
Participants are invited to bring:
One to four small figures
