A Place Character Study is a guided session for exploring the character, atmosphere, and possible future direction of a place, property, or space.

Rather than treating a place as a neutral setting or a list of features, it invites closer attention to how a place is perceived and experienced: how it feels, what it suggests, what it carries, and how its character becomes tangible through atmosphere, sensory cues, spatial structure, history, surroundings, use, and context.

The aim is to create a clear, attentive setting in which the qualities, tensions, traces, and possibilities of a place can become more visible, legible, and communicable.

A Place Character Study asks:

What kind of presence does this place have?
What shapes its atmosphere?
What should be preserved, brought forward, or carefully developed?
What future direction, story, use, design approach, or form of presentation would feel in tune with its character?

A Place Character Study is especially useful when a place has atmosphere, history, ambiguity, unrealized potential, or a character that is difficult to describe in ordinary real-estate, design, or marketing language.

It can support owners, hosts, creatives, project initiators, small teams, cultural spaces, hospitality settings, shops, studios, and public-facing places that want to better understand and articulate the character of a place before decisions are made about use, design, communication, presentation, or development.

However, it is not an architectural, psychological, technical, or real-estate valuation. It is a facilitated contextual and interpretive inquiry into a place, focused on character, atmosphere, meaning, perception, presentation, and direction.

Sessions are available locally in Hannover and the surrounding region. Depending on the project, other locations and remote sessions are also possible.

I work in both German and English and am happy to support expats, international owners, and bilingual projects.

What the Session Looks At

Depending on the question and setting, the study may consider:

atmosphere and first impression
spatial structure and orientation
light, material, sound, scent, and other sensory cues
visible traces of use, history, and change
surroundings, location, and neighborhood context
current and possible future uses
design and narrative potential
the relationship between place, purpose, presentation, and perception

What Happens During a Session

The session usually combines guided observation, walking, note-taking, conversation, and shared reflection.

Depending on the place and purpose, the session may include:

an introductory conversation about the place and the question behind it
a guided walk-through or observation phase
attention to atmosphere, sensory cues, spatial structure, traces, and context
individual notes, photographs, sketches, or prompt-based observations
shared discussion of what was noticed
articulation of the place’s character, tensions, qualities, and possible directions
a concluding reflection on what should be preserved, brought forward, clarified, or developed

The process is structured but open. It creates space for perception, context, conversation, and careful interpretation.

My Approach

I work through close observation, guided inquiry, contextual analysis, conversation, and curatorial thinking.

My role is not to impose a ready-made concept on a place. I create a structured setting in which what is already present can be noticed more clearly: spatial character, atmosphere, traces, material qualities, surroundings, history, use, tension, and possible future directions.

This approach is informed by more than 30 years of analytical practice: observing complex situations, recognizing patterns, clarifying context, and translating findings into clear, usable forms. It is also informed by professional photographic work published in home design books, design magazines, and newspapers, where attention to light, atmosphere, composition, and spatial character is essential.

A Place Character Study helps make visible, legible, and communicable what a place already carries: its atmosphere, traces, tensions, qualities, and possibilities.

Session Format

A Place Character Study is offered as a facilitated on-site session of 60–90 minutes for 1 to 5 participants.

The session is structured but responsive. Its exact focus depends on the place, the people involved, and the question behind the session.

Larger groups may be possible upon request, especially in larger spaces, cultural settings, educational contexts, gardens, neighborhoods, or public-facing places. In these cases, the format may need to be adapted and a surcharge may apply.

Fee

The local fee for a Place Character Study session begins at €350 including VAT.

This includes preparation, facilitation, and one 60–90 minute on-site session for 1 to 5 participants.

Additional costs may apply for larger groups, travel, special preparation, bilingual delivery, photographic notes, written follow-up, recurring sessions, or individually developed formats.

A concise written summary, atmospheric description, visual notes, or follow-up reflection can be added according to scope.

Reduced rates may be possible for selected local, educational, cultural, or community-based projects.
